On the Cutting Table

Having recovered my sewjo recently I stumbled across the idea of the #Make9 trend on Instagram and the idea of planning your makes out in advance, in one fell swoop for the year is one that appeals to me enormously.

My sewing goals for this year involve lots of stretch, mostly of my sewing ability as I am planning to venture into garments this year that I haven't felt sufficiently brave or skilled enough to take on before.

It all got off to a flying start with my attempt at sewing lingerie with the lovely Emerald Erin's Jordy Bralette. But technically since it was Christmas 2019 when I did this I haven't included it in my make 9 plans for the year.

If you want to see how my Jordy Bralette went click here for a separate post on that.

My first planned make for 2020 is one I that was love at first sight.

Tilly and the Buttons Agnes Top is just the prettiest sleeve detail on an otherwise fairly basic looking tshirt that I've ever seen, and I think suitable for my first foray into sewing knits.  I bought the PDF pattern, printed it all out, spent far too long taping it all together and when I went to lay out the fabric realised I had accidentally only purchased one meter instead of two of this lovely cotton spandex Lycra I got online from Tia Knight Fabrics. I had even gone to the trouble of dying the fabric the yummiest shade of lavender for a spring Agnes. I await the arrival of a some new fabric to get going on this project.

You have to have seen the 2 fabulous capsule wardrobe books from Sew Over It by now.   So many patterns to chose from and all good solid basics for your wardrobe that work together.

The Mia Jeans are in the City Break book.

Well, I've watching the progress of the lovely Charlie from This Blog Is Not For You, who has an enviable collection of the very cutest Mia Jeans and it has given me a wish list for several non blue denim pairs of Mia Jeans in my life.  I am currently hunting for the perfect light coloured non pattered stretch denim or twill fabric for these jeans.

If you haven't seen or heard the buzz about the Cloth Habit Watson Bralette and brief them where have you been?!  These are next on my lingerie making hit-list and my biggest problem is that I want to make them in every conceivable colour under the rainbow and cannot decide on which to start with.

I kid you not, I have about twenty fabric and colour ideas in a list and I have analysis paralysis with this project already! I'm leaning toward a gorgeous longline version of the bralette in mesh/milliskin set trimmed in a satiny fold over elastic.  Just don't ask me what colour!

Tessuti fabrics have a lovely pattern for a top called the Alice which is very much my style.

Unusually for me will use up some beautiful soft pinstripe shirting fabric I have in both blue and pink and this will be my first foray into sewing with stripes.

I am hoping that at this stage in the year we will be getting warmer weather here in Ireland and to go with my Alice and Agnes tops I long for a pair of the Sew Over It Camille trousers.

I want to make up in a lovely soft linen for days when I want to feel like I'm making a little effort without really having to make much of an effort!

Similarly the Sew Over It pattern for Ultimate Trousers have been on my radar for a while now.

I'm leaving them till a little later in the year because my shape has been changing lately through some intermittent fasting I'm doing and I'm excited to think that I might have enough self confidence to make these in a  stretch cotton sateen by summer this year.

Here on the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, where I live, it can be wild and windy for much of the year. So my wardrobe needs to accommodate several comfortable warm sweaters. I have fallen in love with Sew House 7's Toaster sweater and it is to be the first of my planned makes with sweater knit.

I just really have not seen a sweater knit that floats my boat.  If sufficiently desperate I make make this up in fleece if I haven't found a sweater knit by then.

Every woman needs an outfit that looks amazing and feels like secret pyjamas to wear.  Everyone online describes Deer & Doe's Sirocco jumpsuit in exactly this way.

I'm an introvert who will socialise for the company of the right people and this Sirocco jumpsuit is going to be my Christmas armour for this year. I'm thinking a black ponte knit would be cosy and dressy.

As a teenager I had a black velvet blazer. A beloved stylish anomaly in an otherwise thrown together wardrobe I maintained.  I have no idea what became of it.  I have wanted one since but haven't until recently seen one In would like to try.

To be honest I don't feel anywhere near ready for the intricacies of jacket making but I am hoping that my odyssey in sewing this year will have me sufficiently up skilled to tackle New Look 6013 by this year's end.

In between all of these projects my daughter wants me to teach her and some of her friends to make pyjama bottoms and I may make a birthday party out of that for her in early April.

Also being a natural slob I would gladly live in sweatshirts and stretch jeans all day everyday so when a pattern catches my eye that uses sweatshirt fabric but looks put together it will have my full attention.

The Heather dress once again by Sew Over It is just such a dress and may allow me to rock up to the school gate looking like I actually know what I'm doing in life!  I would be very surprised if I didn't sneak one of these in this year.

Finally, in the same vein of a ponte or sweatshirt fabric dress you can throw on and look like a grown up there is a Japanese pattern in the Great British Sewing Bee Book that I would love to make up.  I think they just call this the GBSB Drapey Dress.

I find myself leaning toward a royal blue or dark grey heavy weight ponte and can totally see myself in my thick grey tights and grey knee boots rocking this.

My daughter is due to play the role of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast at her school drama production and guess who volunteered to make the costume. I know. I'm mad. But to be honest I'm relishing the chance to make this.

It is way out of my comfort zone and my first time making a proper stage costume. I cannot wait.

I've got this pattern and I think I will make it up in a heavyish gold Jacquard fabric.

My two nephews who recently moved home from New Zealand and whose snuggles I am enjoying thoroughly are in diabolical need of a pair of super hero capes.
Since I have made them before when my own two kids were similar ages (1.5 and 3) I think I will break out my fabric stash and knock a few of these out. Ditto some Montessori aprons.

Essential kid wear!

Whew. That's quite a lot. I can't wait to see how many of these items I manage to get through this year.

What do you have your eye on for this year? Let me know in the comments if you've already made up any of these items and I'd love to see your pictures!
